Blue Ribbon Bow
The Bow River is Canada’s best known trout stream.
This program parallels the book, Blue
Ribbon Bow, showing history, fishing methods, hatches, fly patterns,
access, and expectations, with emphasis on how to understand the river
and catch fish today.
Fly fishers familiar with the Bow will come away from this
program with a better understanding of the river's idiosyncrasies.
Fly fishers unfamiliar with the river will move the Bow to the top of
their angling "to-do" lists.

The Crowsnest River
This program focuses on the fly-fishing that’s available on
Alberta’s second well-known trout stream. The Crowsnest River is
one of the west's best small rivers. It is a highly accessible,
public-water stream that is full of 12 to 20-inch rainbows and
cutthroats. This program covers in detail hatches,
methods, access, seasons, accommodation, fly patterns, and trip
planning.

Trout Streams of Alberta
Long one of
fly-fishing's best kept secreets, the western Canadian province of
Alberta has become on of the sport's mainstream destinations. This is the companion program to the book of the same name.
It examines each major river drainage in Alberta – the Oldman, Bow,
Red Deer, Athabasca, North Saskatchewan, and Peace systems, and
highlights the general characteristics of each watershed, including the
types of streams, fish species, hatches, access, and seasons. It
also examines one stream from each system in greater detail - the
Crowsnest, Bow below Calgary, North Raven, North Ram, Maligne, and
Little Smoky. This is one
of Jim’s most popular programs.

Reading Moving Water
Where are the
fish? This program shows how to find trout in different types of streams
- small, large, freestone, spring creek. It identifies and
explains the two requirements for figuring out where the fish are
– understanding how water flows, and knowing what fish need. This
program is particularly suitable for audiences hungry for practical
fishing information that is useful on their own rivers.

Fishing Photography
Capture your memories! This program illustrates and discusses in
layman’s language the three major components of a good photograph -
subject, light, composition - and explains how to create better
photographs of your fishing trips.
The principles apply to both digital and SLR photography in any
type of outdoor setting.
Fly Fishing New Zealand
New Zealand has the reputation of being a place where there are
thousands of trout streams, where the water is crystal-clear and where
the trout average five pounds. It’s
all true, but there are some other things potential travelers need to
know. This program shows
the beauty of the country and the uniqueness of the sight fishing
methods that are used in New Zealand. It also addresses and
informs about seasons, travel, accommodation options, guides, lodges,
expectations, costs.

Understanding
Big Rivers
The larger the stream, the more difficult it is to figure out.
This program addresses the topics of reading big rivers, and
understanding the nymph, streamer and dry fly methods most useful on big
rivers. It contains
information on fishing from driftboats and by wading.
Uses examples from a number of large rivers including the Bow,
Missouri, and Elk.

Fly
Tying Demonstration
Jim often does a tying demonstration which features two or three fly
patterns highlighted in his books.
These patterns incorporate tying tricks and shortcuts which both
new and experienced tiers can use.
Fly
Casting Demonstration
Jim’s casting demonstration focuses on the
fundamentals of the basic stroke, loop control, and timing.
In addition he shows ways in which anglers can assess and improve
their own casting. While
best done outdoors, this demonstration can also be done indoors with an
innovative demo rod. When possible,
students
will be video-taped so they can observe their own casting.

Outdoor
Writing Workshop
Jim has been active as an outdoor writer for 25 years.
He has prepared a two to three-hour workshop that can be offered
to smaller groups of interested writers.
It addresses the definition and function of parts of a
magazine story – the lead, body, ending; a hands-on re-write of a
magazine story draft; a discussion
of markets, pay rates, protocol and process for queries and submissions;
the importance of photography; writing
for the market;
a
suggested reading list.
