In the old days a new fly fisher had two choices – read a book or learn
from a friend. Today there are other choices, including video and DVD,
but the best way to learn is from a qualified instructor. And there’s an important distinction between knowing how to
fish and knowing how to teach fishing.
Over the last 25 years literally thousands of Alberta’s fly fishers
have learned the sport under the instruction of Jim or Lynda McLennan. For many years Jim taught Fly Fishing Schools
in Calgary, as well as at various clubs and fly fishing expositions. Lynda has taught for numerous events and shops since 1985.
They have a great lineup of fly fishing schools planned in 2012 for both new and experienced anglers. Take advantage of their combined
50 years’ experience in teaching fly fishing. (Tackle can be provided for schools if required.)
If
you don't find what you are looking for, please give us a call and we
can prepare a day, afternoon or weekend to accommodate your
needs. We specialize in private and corporate schools.
Other folks agree that taking lessons is worthwhile.

What
people say!
Jim,
I just want to say thank you so much for a great experience
on the Bow. I know I'm speaking for both myself and my father when I say
it went above and beyond our expectations. Everything we covered -
especially the casting technique - will be a benefit for a very long time.
And we could not have asked for a more knowledgeable, friendly and well
prepared teacher. It was one of the very best days we've ever spent on not
only the Bow but any water.
Our sincere thanks and best wishes,
Geoff and Pete 2008

Hello Jim & Lynda,
I want to say thanks for a day of enlightenment. I will always be in
your debt for the knowledge I acquired on the Bow River back on July
3rd. The sharing of truths, insights and your experience gave me a
broader tactical perceptive. I am sure that for every hour we spent
together I could have spent a year on the water only to realize a
fraction of what was there to be interpreted. Being better prepared has
made fly fishing a more engaging experience.
Till our trails cross again,
Many Thanks!
Tom, Calgary, AB 2010
Aug. 2008 - Thanks again Lynda for a great day. I learned so much and really look
forward to putting my new skills to use. You have a great approach and I
was truly amazed on how much I was able to get out of a single
day. Shawn
Shawn continued his fly fishing journey with another private school in 2010.

Even if you are a complete beginner
like myself you will get a whole lot out of Lynda McLennan's Deluxe
Intro to Fly Fishing. First of all, she shows you how to do everything
from casting to reading the water--and all in one day. She managed to
straighten out my problems with casting and to show me a rod that was
easy for me to manage. After lunch outside on the gorgeous waterfront
camp, Lynda explains all that you need to know about your fishing gear,
including the magic of knots, something that I had always found
difficult and am now doing with no problem. Her explanations are ever so
much clearer than those in the books. The next step is a mini-course in
the various types of fish food in which you learn to identify the
different stages of the three main types of flies on the Bow River, and
the various imitations to use for each. At the end of the day, you get a
chance to try our your new- found knowledge on the river. I highly
recommend following this with a second day of class on the river where
you get more practice casting on the water and using dry flies, nymphs,
and streamers. After my two days with Lynda I am now catching fish on
my own. More importantly, I have gained a wealth of insight into the art
of choosing and casting the fly, based on Lynda's brilliantly clear
explanations and wealth of knowledge from her thirty some years of
experience.

What Folks Say:
Jim and Lynda,
Just a quick note to pass along a HUGE "Thank you" for organizing such a
wonderful day on the Bow for myself and 9 of my clients.
You are well educated fishers and excellent hosts. All participants in
our full day-long "fly fishing school' indicated they had an excellent
time and learned many new things - regardless of their level of
experience. That is a true gift - to take 10 participants of varying
levels of skill and experience and cater to each and every one of them.
Lunch was fantastic, conversation was engaging and the fishing was
fine! Jim's CD provided an excellent way to wind down the day on the
drive home. I would definitely like to bring a group of clients to your
school again.
Thanks again for a terrific day. I look forward to seeing you again soon.
